  Area All-State Band Information

October 2, 2007

Dear Student,

Congratulations!  You have been selected for the 2006 Zone 11 Area All-State Band.  This year, we are fortunate to have as our conductor, Dr. Brian Doyle.  Dr. Doyle is currently Director of Bands at the Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam where he conducts the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band.  He is very excited about to opportunity to work with us and has high expectations for this year’s band.

The times and dates are:

Wednesday Oct. 24th
Rehearsal 4:00 pm- 9:15 pm
White Plains HS

Wednesday Nov. 7th
4:00 pm- 9:15 pm
White Plains HS

Thursday Nov. 8th
Rehearsal 9:00 am- 4:00 pm
SUNY Purchase

Thursday Nov. 8th
Concert 8:00 pm (Arrive 7 pm)
SUNY Purchase

Attendance at ALL rehearsals is mandatory.  Please be on time and expect to stay for the entire rehearsal.  Any student who misses any portion of a rehearsal for any reason will not be allowed to participate.  You are expected to bring the following to every rehearsal:  music, music stand, pencils, water, and meals (bag dinner on the 24th and 7th, lunch on the 8th).  Come to all rehearsals prepared to work hard and be attentive.  At this level discipline problems should not be an issue and will not be tolerated.  Participation is an honor and I have every confidence you will represent yourself and your school proudly.

Students cannot drive themselves or other students to the rehearsals or concert.  Transportation must be provided by the school district or the student’s parents.  WCSMA will not assume responsibility for students who do not adhere to this rule.

The program consists of the following selections:

Ticheli - Shenandoah
Margolis – The Renaissance Fair
Stamp – Gavorkna Fanfare
Chance – Incantation and Dance

All music is strictly accounted for and must be returned after the concert.  You will be charged $5 per page for unreturned music.  You are expected to have all music prepared by the first rehearsal on Oct. 24th.  I cannot stress how important this is. Taking the time to get notes and rhythms down in advance will ensure we have plenty of time to concentrate on making music at rehearsals.  Let’s show Dr. Doyle how well prepared we can be here in Westchester County.

Dress for the concert is:

Men – black dress slacks, white shirt, long tie, black dress shoes.

Women – long black skirts (at least knee-length) or black dress pants, white blouses, black dress shoes.

If you have any questions please speak with your band director first.  If necessary, she or he should be the one to contact me or the festival coordinator, Mr. Eckfeld.  I am best reached at work.

I look forward to meeting and working with you.  With your cooperation, hard work, and patience this should be a wonderful festival.  See you on the 24th!

Congratulations,

William Tonissen
